I found myself quite relaxed when it came to this unit and I think thats because I am quite confident in myself and my ideas. When I think of my projects I usually tend to think of it quite visually and this helps with the look of the film, which I think was really important for ours. Overall I am quite happy with the general aesthetic of the film and I think it works well to get the message across. When I first pitched my idea to the class, I imagined it to be more or less exactly what we created and in some ways I'm really pleased about that. Im happy that I was able to create a piece that I thought of and directed myself and that what was produced is actually good quality but I have found that when it comes to film I am very structured with my approach and this held me back, I feel, from being even more experimental. If I could start again, I would probably try and get more shorts of Yasmin being affected by the images as I think more footage would have been more interesting to work with. Overall I am happy with what we produced. I think we worked well together as a group and Ive really enjoyed making this film.
Putting the Film Together
As I had the footage on my hard drive, I decided to edit the main footage myself, as we had picked out the shots we liked most and wanted to use. I decided to edit as if the film was in four parts: when the characters is watching the TV, the montages symbolising what she had watched, the effects of the subliminal messages and the aftermath. As we had not yet edited the montages I decided to leave a gap where they would go so I could edit around them. I started with the long shot panning between Yasmin and the television to set the mood and theme of the film, followed by the shots of her watching the TV. Then I left 5 small gaps where the montages would go and around them I put the reaction shots of Yasmin watching the television, which I cut very short so they would blend with the montages. After the montages I added the shots representing the affects of subliminal imagery. I didn't have much of a plan in terms of arrangement but I thought it made sense to start off with the less 'extreme' shots and build up the crazy throughout the film, ending with the mess the character made.
Next we edited the montages as a group. Together we spent some time looking for archive footage that would be suitable for each of the five themes and we started editing the first montage together. However this process was taking longer than expected so we edited the montages individually, I edited sex and fear, Nicole edited drugs and violence, and Rufaro edited food. To create the montages we used found footage, this was because the footage was meant to symbolise what people watch everyday. We cut the footage up really short as if they were like a bombardment of flashing imagery representing subliminal messages. After we made each of them they were added into the main film.
When it came to colour grading, I used the colour wheel to change the tones in the footage. I added more blue and purple into each of the clips to cancel out the orangey colour and make the walls look whiter. I also turned up the contrast on all of the clips to make the shadows stand out more and enhance the colours. I think this improved the look of film especially the makeup scenes as the black and red makeup now stood out stronger.
After watching the film, we thought that the montages blended into the film to much and it wasn't obvious enough that the montages were what she has seen, or a representation of what she'd seen. So I decided to make them look like they are being watched on an older television, like the one we actually used in the film. To give them a VHS look, I first added lines overplayed on the footage and then added TV grain. The grain was very subtle but adds to the effect.

Finally I added typography to the film starting with the title and credits. I decided to add the credits to the opening of the film as I felt it worked aesthetically with the longer shots. I think the font I chose worked well with the film as its futuristic look coheres to the theme of watching television and the media. We also added quick flashing text to the montages to recreate the old techniques of subliminal messages. For each of the themes we chose certain words to flash such as: heroin, overdose, drugs are cool, for drugs etc. and we put around ten words in each of the montages. To recreate the classic technique we use Arial Black, a large bold font, in white for each of the words. The idea was very inspired by the artist Barbara Kruger. For the rest of the film we decided to use more of this idea but make it even less noticeable by adding the typography but using the overlay effect so it blends into the film. Lastly I decided to add all the words to the last shot before the aftermath, flashing one after the other.

Evaluation and Final Sound
Recording Sound
As the session in the sound recording studio did not work out, I realised I would have to take out a recorder if I were to get my sounds ready in time to edit for the deadline. I decided to take out the H4N Zoom Recorder out as it was recommended to us as the best one we could take out from uni. Again I did not have any experience with this equipment so I decided to watch a YouTube tutorial so I could get an idea of how to use the equipment. It turned out that it was very simple to use and managed to record all my sounds quickly and easily. I decided to record the sounds that I could make with my body parts on this device as I already had the sounds for the 'museum' and hammering, that I recorded with my phone while I was at the sport centre. I thought that the echoing sounds from the large halls would work well in sounding like a museum so I quickly recorded the sounds of people as they were leaving. I also got the hammering sound while I was home for the weekend.
I also decided to rename the sounds so editing the sound would be easier.
Sound Studio
To record the sounds of my project me, Chloe and Nicole booked out the recording studio R23, that we were shown. We had the room booked out for a few hours, so we were hoping we would each have enough time to record all of our sounds for our projects. When we got into the room we were not 100% sure on how to use all of the recording equipment, but we remembered some of our induction and there was manual with information on both the main recording area and the recording booth. We managed to get everything working but struggled to actually record any sound. As Nicole and myself had a tutorial during our scheduled time in the recording studio, we were away from R23 for about an hour with proved to be quite an inconvenience as it meant we had less time to work out what we needed to do. Towards the end of our time in the studio, I worked out our issue. As I have little to no experience with any sound recording equipment, I did not realise that the recording button pressed once was to prep before recording and pressed twice was to actually record the sound. We tried to get help for the situation but James was in a lesson and we was not sure who else to ask. Luckily we worked it out by the end of the session so if we decide to book out the studio again we would be able to get on and setup faster. I wouldn't consider our time in the studio a waste as we managed to work it out on our own so it will be a more memorable experience.
List of Potential Sounds
To prepare for my time in the sound recording studio I decided to create a short list of sounds off the the top of my head so it wouldn't feel like I going into the recording blind. I think these are the most obvious sounds that can be made with these body parts and would work into my soundscape. I am planning to record a variation of these sounds, ranging in pitch and speed.
Nose:
Nose:
Heavy breathing, snorting, sniffing nose
Mouth:
Speaking, whistling, smacking lips, teeth chattering, eating, gasping, scream, pop, breathing, laughing, kissing noise, ah
Body:
Scratching, clicking fingers, clapping hands, rubbing hands together, stomping feet, shuffling feet along floor,
Sound Research
For my soundscape I was thinking that I could use my sounds to create a short song rather than just a collection of sounds. I could use all the different sounds like percussion to first create a beat to the song and gradually build up layers to create a melody. I think sounds like breathing and stomping would make a good bass to the track and the vocal elements would work in building up a melody. For inspiration I looked on youtube at artists such as Pogo who uses sounds from films to create a song. I enjoy their work as it take many elements like speech and sounds from the movies to create something new.
Of course as this is my first time creating something like this I am not planning on doing something as intricate but I do think I could make something similar. I think I will start with a very subtle bass like breathing and then gradually build up, I would also like to try cutting up the voices like Pogo does but I am worried that it will take away from the idea of different identities and the uses of different languages.
Using Adobe Audition
For my first try on Adobe Audition I was given certain sounds based around an avalanche, the sounds including walking through snow, various cascading winter particles and skiing sounds. I decided to make my soundscape about a person walking through the snow gradually getting higher and higher up the mountain. On the way they are stopped by a skiing coming down the mountain and covering them in snow. They then carry on with the journey but now in deeper snow so the walking is slower and clumpier. Towards the end of the soundscape, the character starts to run and gradually the sound of snow falling gets louder and louder until you can no longer hear the person running.
I found it quite easy to get used to creating a simple soundscape on audition as I transferred my skills from Premiere Pro which is kinda similar. I added a short visual to the soundscape and uploaded it to Vimeo.
Filming Day
We were originally meant to meet on the Sunday to shoot for our film, but due to issues taking out equipment on the Friday before, we had to reschedule. We decided to film on the following Tuesday because unfortunately this meant that the equipment would have to be returned the next day so we had to film everything at once, but I was confident that we could.
We met at 1:00 to get out the equipment and we all met at the equipment hire, here we ran into a few problems. We had all the forms ready including permission to film but we did not have an equipment list so we could not get the equipment out straight away. Instead we had to wait until we could get an equipment list which took quite some time and set us back a few hours. Afterwards we went to lidl to get some props, we bought: a small chocolate cake, 3 jam doughnuts and whip cream for the food sections of our film. It came to around £3.07 which me and Nicole split between us.
We got back to my house, where we filmed, at around 3.30 pm and started to setup. We arranged the room to make more space and placed plastic sheets on the floor and a small VHS TV in the corner of the room. I liked the look with the plastic and TV on the floor as it gave the room an eerie, strange vibe and would keep the floors clean. We also setup one of the red head lights and Nicole added a blue filter and two diffusion sheets to give the room a bright but natural glow, which darkness around the edges. We also setup the camera, tripod (to a mid height), the microphone and covered the window with a black sheet so the only light we had was from the red head.
It took us around 3 hours to print overall and in my opinion it went really well, considering we had the pressure of filming all in one day I think everything went quite smoothly. We followed the shot list that I had made and this really helped with the flow of filming. I think we worked well as a group and everyone gave their opinions and ideas on the shots which really helped. I also thought Yasmin, as our actress, worked really well, she got herself into the roll and was really enthusiastic about helping us with our film.

| The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dalli (1931) |
In Dali's piece, the most prominent feature is the melting clocks, which is what I would focus on, as well as the ocean in the background and the 'face' draped across the middle. Obviously I can develop on this but I think my other choices would have more options and influence more solid ideas.

| Dull Gret by Peter Brugal the Elder (c1564) |
Brugal's painting Dull Gret features a woman wearing a dress, breastplate and helmet running across the 'fiery mouth of hell'. You can see in one hand she's holding a sword and in the other she has a basket of food, pots and pans. You can see a hill resembling a face suggested to be the 'mouth of hell in the direction she is running and the entire scene is filled with strange, deformed creatures eating people and attacking each other. I liked the theme of chaos in the picture which is why I was drawn to it, but I would like to make a track that wouldn't be too overwhelming.

My Final Video
In the end I actually did use myself as the character of the film as when I went to film no one was available. This was fine with me however because it meant I could work at my own pace, I framed and focused the camera first imaging the scene with me in it. Because I could not see how the character would be in the footage I ended up with some interesting shots which I was happy with. I lit the scene naturally with the light coming from the window next to the desk here the subject sat. I edited the shots based on what was happening with the animation. I used the more interesting shots at the beginning before it started, then the longer simple shots of me on the laptop, when I want all the focus on the animation, Then finally a shot of me shutting down the computer to end the film, when I click 'Shut Down...' the visual completely goes black as if I had shut off the video. I decided to make the filmed footage black an white to allow the animation to stand out as it is the main feature, I also thought this made the two screens more compatible and look as if they belong together. I also ended up making the animation slightly darker and more vibrant by upping the contrast.
Finally I added the film name and my name as creator of the film. I decided to call the film presence because the theme of my film is peoples online presence and using the internet to socialise. I thought calling the film online or social presence would be too obvious, I called it just 'Presence' to give an idea of what the film is about without giving away too much. I believe the font I chose corresponds with the thee of technology as the font is simple and clean combined with geometric webs like the 'world wide web'.
Creating my Twin Screen
To edit my video into a twin screen film I decided to use Adobe Premiere Pro as it is a software I'm starting to become very comfortable using. First I created a new composition and used the dimensions 1080p by 3840p so I had room to edit two videos side by side. Because I didn't yet have any footage for the real life side of the film I filmed myself quickly doing, kind of, what I want in the video to get an idea of the outcome. I also added the music I wanted to use in the film, but again, did not edit it properly so I could get a quick idea of what my film will be like until I film again. I chose this music because it included a simple intro that I could use for the beginning of the film where the animation is not on screen and then the main song itself is very surreal and preppy and works well with the colourful animation in my opinion.
As you can see in the video I also edited the animated side of the film to make it more appealing and coherent to the music. I also wanted the animation to tell a short story. The colours are to symbolise the characters social presence so I also wanted to add an element of social interaction, which is why I duplicated the particle dance above to represent two people socialising online (like Facebook messenger etc). To make the particle dance more interesting I cut it up into shorter sections based on the songs beat. At the start I kept it just the one animation emerging from the bottom of the screen as if the character is just logging in to the account. Then as the bass gets louder in the song I added the second animation coming down from the top of the screen mirroring the first animation, I did this by simply duplicating the layer of the animation and rotating it. Finally I reversed the top video and left the normal to create a more interesting visual for the end to the video. I also decided that I should add an X on the second video to match the first to connect them both together.
Particle Dance Animation
After searching on the internet I really liked the idea of using the particle dance animation so I searched the internet to find tutorials on how to make one and I followed a tutorial by a Youtube called VideoFort to help me create this animation. To add my own personal touch I tweaked some of the instructions given in the tutorial to add more movement to the animation, add more particles around the animation and I chose my own colour scheme. I based the colour scheme around my subject of online presence and thought about the colours you would often see. I used blues because blue is a common colour used in social media as it is a colour that keeps the brain engaged and makes the user somewhat obsessed with the site and yellow and green as they are colours associated with the popular games: The Sims and online social games Habbo and World of Warcraft. When it came to the background I tried both black and white to see which I preferred. I decided to keep it black so the animation would stand out but I didn't like how it looked so flat so I used a gradient from a dark grey to a darker grey to give the animation more depth. Finally I added a glow to the animation to help it shine and stand out further. An issue I had making and exporting my animation was that the file was so large that it cause me a lot of problems when I wanted to watch a preview of what I had done, I could watch the animation itself but not when the extra particles and glow were added which was an annoyance when editing, I had to judge by what I could seen while the preview was still. Also after exporting there was a large X covering the animation, I learned that this was because I had to download a plugin for After Effects to create what I wanted and was using a free trial of the software. Because it was free, I assume the company did not want me to use the software properly. I tried to key out the colour but had difficulty so I tried playing around with the colour of the cross and decided to keep it but now make it a really light grey.
This was my final animation that I created and uploaded to Vimeo.
Animation Research
As I did not want to use the typical music visualisation look for my animation I decided to look at videos of other kinds of visuals that I would be able to make on After Effects. First I looked at kaleidoscope animations as they were my first thought when it came to colourful animations and the first video was the one I liked the most, I mostly liked the colour scheme for it and it looks a lot like how I had imagined mine to if I were to create a kaleidoscope animation. The second video is of a particle animation with I found very enticing, the third video below that is also a particle animation but one I found more visually appealing regarding colouring and the actual visual effects. I think I would actually like to make one of each animations to try alongside my video of the real time person and see which animations connect better with the second screen and which has the best effect.
Developing a New Idea
Because the first idea didn't work I decided to think more about what I could do. As the theme for the twin screen project is to look into the relationship between technology and humans, I would like to look into peoples online presence and how people present themselves online/ on virtual reality games where you create avatars, such as The Sims or social online games like Habbo or IMDB. To do this project, my visual idea is to use one screen to show what is actually happening, a person slouched over the computer clicking the mouse and pressing some keys, and then create a colourful fun scenario on the second screen. I have thought of a few ways I could symbolise the way a virtual presence can be more exciting, or seem more exciting, than everyday life.
My first idea was to use the same person but dressed up a bit (wearing nice clothes, hair done) and then showing that person in a colourful space and socialising with people, but I thought this idea was basic and I couldn't think of anyway I could incorporate After Effects.
My next idea was to use simply colour to represent virtual reality. Using colour was a big part of what I thought about animated ways colour could be used. First I thought about music visualisation and how that is basically just colour moving on the screen and gradually changing. I thought this would be a cool way of using animation but I don't really like the harsh look of it so I am planning to look into another form of similar animation that I could do on After Effects.
Creating the look
To practice, I filmed myself on the webcam of my laptop and used a colour pattern video that I had edited to see how the colours would look overlaying a video, I would have preferred to have used a projector and project colour directly onto the subject but I did not have access to one so I thought I would try and simulate it myself. I think the colours looked cool but I struggled to make them look as if they had been projected onto the subject, the colours almost took over the whole film.
I decided to use Adobe After Effects to make my animation I started off creating a new composition and using the dimensions 1080p by 3840p as I wanted the animation to cover the entire video and float around the middle between the two screens. I created a solid and joined a particle effect to it so I could control the movement of them. Then I changed most of the physics settings to 0 so the particles all make one strait line, after that I made a key at the top and the bottom of the animation so as it plays the line goes from the bottom to the top. Next I changed the gravity settings and thats what made the line fly around. Lastly for the animation I duplicated the particle layer twice so I could create a new path of particles to add to the animation. On one of the layers I reduced the gravity slightly more so it to fly around on its own but from the same point as the other two layers. Then I changed the colours of the particles so they started off withe and faded into pink. Finally I added the glow effect to the particles and changed the background colours, I chose blue and white so the animation could over lay on the video and won't change the colours of the video too much.
Although I do see potential in this idea I'm not sure how well the final piece will come out after my experiments. I also didn't think that the film involved enough After Effects and seemed a bit weak on the development side. Although I may not use this exact
Virtual Reality Twin Screen
I want to base my project around my idea of online presence and virtual reality. For my film I am planning to create a short fashion film based around colour and use a flare animation to link the videos. The film would not focus on the fashion specifically as that is only used to symbolise the 'futuristic' and fantasy feel from playing a virtual reality game and the avatars that are created in games. I want the film to look like it is in an unrealistic environment with glowing lights and colours (pastel colours: blue, green, yellow, pink). I am planing on using a smoke machine and a projector to create the misty colourful environment and featuring a variety of different angles, shots and camera movements to make the film more interesting and engaging.

Synopsis & Treatment
Synopsis
A theatrical short film looking into the idea that people can try to control your mind, subconsciously, though the use of certain imagery or sounds. Subliminal messages like these have been used for years and can be as subtle as product placement. This technique is known to be done in 5 different ways through themes of sex, drugs, violence, food and fear. In our film we are planning to address this technique in a dramatised way by putting one character through five scenarios based on these themes. The film will show the character watching a montage of images that symbolise each of the themes and show the effects the images had on her.

Collected Clutter | Evaluation
Overall I am pretty happy with my final images and i'm pleased with the photos I decided to choose to use in my final collection. I thought the colouring of faded pink and pale blue for the photos worked well together and connected them all visually. I think keeping around 50mm framing was a good idea as it gave the pictures more depth and challenged me to find a more interesting angle to shoot at. Editing the photos, I think that using Adobe Lightroom to edit was a good idea as it is easy to use when changing the colouring and I found it much simpler than photoshop for colour correction. However if I were to do the project again I would've edited my pictures without the grain and made the pictures a bit more colourful, even though I was going for an 'old photo' look, I think more colour would go well in the photos. I would have also printed my photos on the silk paper rather than matte because the shiny paper would keep more of the colour in the picture and would suit the pictures better. It was also a shame that I was unable to create my pictures with the models in then as I thought the concept was interesting and it would have given me a chance to practice a style of photography that I really like. It was unfortunate that the models I had planned to take photos of were not available to shoot with on the times arranged. From this project i've learnt that I should have more confidence in my pictures and go with my gut when it comes to editing. I have also acquired the knowledge that the printer will print photos much darker and less colourful than they are on the computer. I will remember this for future projects.

Through this series of five images I am reminiscing on the change of styles over the past years. The work was inspired by my grandparents home which is filled with mismatched decor dating back from the 70s till modern day. The pictures represent my grandparents through only a small amount of possessions and their choice of decoration, showing how possessions can be used to represent a person and give an insight into their life.

The Presentation
Originally I was planning to add a borders around the photos almost like a polaroid instant picture but after doing so I decided they looked better without so its easier to focus on the pictures. I also had to decide on how I wanted to present the pictures so I tested out a few arrangements on photoshop. I tried the pictures all in a row, vertically and horizontally, but I thought they would take up to much space in the exhibition and I wanted the presentation to be a bit more interesting so I tried these two looks. I decided the top one was how I wanted my work to be presented because I personally found it more aesthetically pleasing. I arranged them in the way that they are based on what featured in the photo. The two on top both look like the belong on top, I feel, because of the angle that I had taken them. The next two are viewed from a higher angle but are both objects, in reality, in the same position as the top but look as if they are lower down. Finally the bottom image was taken on the floor so I thought that the arrangement looked evenly proportioned with this at the bottom.

Best photos from the second shoot
From the last photo shoot I went through and picked out these few pictures that were my favourites. Although I have not yet edited any of them how I would like the final photographs, I have altered the colour on most of them. What I liked most was that each of the pictures look like the scenes are decorated in a vintage fashion but the styles are not 100% determined or obvious. Especially in the photo where you can see the bedroom. The bookshelf shows things from a few different eras; theres an obvious contrast as you can see the modern DS games and the old VHS videos.
